October Scripture Memorization Challenge

Memorization is POWERFUL! Which is why we are thrilled to tell you about our monthly memorization challenge. Moving forward we'll be be memorizing a scripture each month to coordinate with the monthly theme. I may seem a little overly excited about this, but I know from experience that when you work to make make a scripture a part of you, it changes you. Richard G. Scott said,

"Memorizing scriptures is like filling a filing cabinet with friends, values, and truths that can be called upon anytime, anywhere in the world.  Great power can come from memorizing scriptures. To memorize  scripture is to forge a new friendship. It is like discovering a new individual who can help in time of need, give inspiration and comfort, and be a source of motivation for needed change.”

I have felt this in my own life, and I can’t wait for us to experience it together with this memorization challenge.

The scripture for this month is Proverbs 6:23:

For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life.

I live in a beautiful little farming town of less than a thousand people. So, it probably won’t surprise you to hear that I don’t have any street lights on my road. Needless to say, my morning jog is VERY dark. On those mornings where the moon is hidden, I can hardly see my hand in front of my face. When I run I need two things: my head lamp and my dog Sophie.

One very dark morning I was about a mile from my house when my headlamp went out. Although I was on a road I have run on hundreds of times, the complete darkness caused me to feel lost and frightened.  I had to turn off my headphones, and walk super slowly. I made Sophie stay right next to me. Even with this loyal protector by my side, I found myself jumping at each sound I heard, as everything suddenly felt strange and unfamiliar. With every unknown sound, I would jump three feet. It felt like the minute my light went out I was sure all the snakes, coyotes, skunks, bears, and creepers were coming to get me. Just then, the wind caught my braid and it hit the side of my face. It scared me so bad I tripped over a rock and landed on my face!

This embarrassing story came to mind when I read Proverbs 6:23. Being obedient to God’s commandments is just like a headlamp—just like the scripture says, “the commandment is a lamp”—and it's a light we desperately need. The commandments illuminate the path back to our Father in Heaven. They shine light on the person God wants us to become. They bring clarification and enlightenment to confusion and chaos. They bring safety and security in a sometimes dark and scary world.

For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life.

Even on a very dark morning, my headlamp gives me security, and allows me to enjoy the beautiful quiet Idaho mornings. Likewise, the commandments of God bring security and safely, and allow us to enjoy and learn on this beautiful path of life.

We pray that memorizing this scripture will help you during those times when obedience seems hard or even impossible. We bear testimony that the more diligent you are in following the Lord, the brighter your light will become and the more you will feel the warmth of His light and love in your life.

Here are a few tips to help you in your memorizing:

1  |  Use this printable! Put it in your high traffic areas so it will remind you to practice. My favorite spot is right by my kitchen sink - then while I do dishes I can also memorize.

2  |  Find a buddy! Being accountable to someone is HUGE. It’s a great way to keep you motivated, and build relationships with friends and family. My daughter and I love to memorize things together, and see who can get it down first.

3  |  Take a snap shot of the printable and use it as your home screen. This way you will have it with you whenever you need it and help you remember to memorize every time you look at your phone.

4  |  Listen to it. Record yourself saying the scripture on your phone. Then you can listen to it whenever you need. This might be necessary for such a short scripture, but it is really helpful for longer ones.

Good luck memorizing this month's scripture, and share with us how it's impacting you below, or by tagging #nourishtheseed online!
