Family Lesson | Receiving Light through Scripture

Family Lesson | Receiving Light through Scripture

A few months ago I laid in bed crying to my husband upset with how hard my week had been. I just had my third baby a few months prior and felt tired and overwhelmed with all my responsibilities. My sweet husband talked to me about everything bothering me and then asked me if I had been saying my prayers and reading my scriptures. I had been saying prayers but I was not reading my scriptures daily. He suggested to try reading the scriptures each day to see if it would help. Scripture study has always been a challenging thing for me, but I decided to take on the challenge. I desperately wanted, and needed help from my Heavenly Father.

I started gradually to commit each day to read the scriptures. It was challenging to create this habit. Going from no reading to a little reading didn't come naturally. But, something awesome happened. The first few days I read from the scriptures in the morning, and those days were very different. The days went smoother. I was happier. I was overall a better mother. My children still whined, I still had problems, and my days weren't perfect, but the scriptures brought a light to me that I didn't have before. I was more patient, less anxious, and I had a more positive perspective. The Spirit was with me, and I could feel it. A missing light was added to my day. It was subtle, but powerful.

During this recent experience of reading the scriptures, I learned that roses need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day in order to blossom. They don't blossom as well in the shade, and ideally they should be in full sunlight. I believe we are all just like these roses. We all need light to grow and to blossom, and just like these roses we suffer when we are in darkness. By regularly reading and studying the scriptures, we allow ourselves to be bathed in direct sunlight from God. We then become filled with this light as we learn of our Savior Jesus Christ and His teachings. As we do so and apply the things we learn, we will grow and blossom just as a beautiful rose.

"...thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple."

— Psalms 119:130

I wanted to create a family activity to teach my own family about the importance of regular scripture study. I created a simple rose bush that is waiting for it's buds to bloom. All it needs is a little light each day to fill its barren stems with beautiful roses!

This bush will be our scripture reading tracker. Each day when my family reads the scriptures together we will place a blossomed rose on to the bush. We will continue this activity until the bush is bursting with beautiful roses, in hopes to make scripture study a daily habit. I'm also hoping that this activity will get my young children excited about reading the scriptures.

I would love it if you would join me! Set aside a night with your family to explain the analogy of the roses and introduce the scripture reading tracker. Bear your testimony to your children about the power of the Word of God and how it has impacted your life. Modify the purpose of the tracker to fit the needs and age of your family, and have fun!
