May's Theme — The Family Is Of God

I remember so specifically one Sunday afternoon we were having lunch after church, my little ones were singing a new tune in which the chorus sang:

"God gave us families to help us become what He wants us to be—

This is how He shares His love, for the fam’ly is of God."

It brought tears to my eyes as I listened to my little ones sing this truth. It quickly became a family favorite and caused me to reflect on how my family was helping to create the person God wanted me to be. If the family is the optimal place to share His love, how am I doing? Are my husband and children feeling God's love in our family? Am I feeling the love of God as I serve as Mother and Wife?

It seems a common truth that the more adept we become with something, the more we take it for granted. Take, for example, a sunset or sunrise: the daily assurance that each morning the sun will rise and set. The beauty of colors and clouds painted across the sky is nothing short of a miracle.

I feel like I often fall into the familiarity trap with my little family. Just like the sunrise each morning, they wake with smiling faces and messy hair. And just like the sunset each night, I get to tuck them into bed with kisses and prayers. Is that not just as miraculous? Our life is so full of blessing and miracles, that there are times we hardly even notice them. This month we are talking about one of the greatest gifts God has given his children. A miracle often we are so entrenched in every day, we sometimes miss the majesty of it. This month our theme is, "The Family is of God."

Winston Churchill said, "There is no doubt that it is around the family and home that all the greatest virtues, most dominating virtues of human society, are created, strengthened, and maintained." We could talk about the magnificent structure, systems, and traditions of the family...but ultimately the thing that makes the family one of the most important pieces of life is the Godly love that is found within.

When I had my first child I was dumbfounded at the amount of love I had for the little bean. Which was a little weird, because prior to my baby's birth, everyone loved this deeply had earned it. My parents sacrificed endlessly to give me a beautiful life. My husband was the most loving and selfless person in the world. By contrast though, this baby didn’t do anything to merit my love. If anything, it should love me! I had sacrificed my body, my sleep, my job, my social schedule...and yet, I would do anything for this little baby girl. ANYTHING. To me that is miraculous. A type of love that doesn’t make sense, that doesn’t follow rules or keep scores, that type of love comes from God.

Through focusing on the family this month, we hope you feel strength and encouragement in the truth that:

"God gave us families to help us become what He wants us to be—

This is how He shares His love, for the fam’ly is of God."
