June's Theme — Work, A Divine Principle

From the beginning of time God worked. Six days He worked before He beheld His creation of earth, seas, plants, light, animal, man and was satisfied calling His finished work “very good” (Genesis 1:31). I have certainly never created something of that magnitude, but I can say I have worked hard on many things and experienced a similar feeling, a pleasure from working hard or creating something "very good". Have you felt this lately? Maybe it's as simple as making a baby smile, pulling weeds, making a meal, completing a home project or learning your favorite song on the guitar. These are the things that bring life to our own and to others and can connect us to God as we create and make His world even more beautiful.

Thomas Monson said,

God left the world unfinished for man to work his skill upon. He left the electricity in the cloud, the oil in the earth. He left the rivers unbridged and the forests unfelled and the cities unbuilt. God gives to man the challenge of raw materials, not the ease of finished things. He leaves the pictures unpainted and the music unsung and the problems unsolved, that man might know the joys and glories of creation.

These joys, glories and pleasures of creation are available to us all as we take part in work. Nothing comes without some effort and action. Even “faith without works is dead” (James 2:17). Life takes work. But an abundant life is one that recognizes the beauty that comes in searching, toiling, exerting, kneeling, exploring, questioning, seeking, and, well, working!

Work might seem like a silly topic to study and focus on for a whole month here at The Small Seed, but we hope as you come along with us this month that you might see why a life filled with work is so pivotal in building a life of faith with God by your side, or better, leading you along.
